Cognition exists because the tools schools reached for to handle AI got the problem backwards. We think the answer is not to guess whether a student cheated, but to have a real conversation about what they understand.

Why Cognition exists

A problem seen from the inside

When generative AI arrived in classrooms, schools were handed detection tools that promised to catch it. Instead, they produced false accusations, flagged honest students for writing differently, and reduced years of learning to a percentage no one could explain or defend.

Cognition started from a simple observation, made from a student's own desk: a detector can only ever guess, but a good question reveals everything. If a student can explain their reasoning, defend a choice, and answer a follow-up, they have shown you something no detector ever could. That insight became the whole product.

We do not detect AI. We discover understanding. The difference is the entire reason this company exists.

Cognition is built by Hayden Kong, a developer and student in South Australia. That last word is not a footnote; it is the point. Most education software is designed for students by people who left the classroom long ago. Cognition is being built by someone who still sits in one, who watched the AI-detection era unfold first-hand, and who is closer than most to the experience the product is meant to serve.

He has been designing and shipping software for years, with a focus on clean design, real usability, and frontier technology. A few markers along the way:

These are not slogans. They are the rules we build within, written down so any school, teacher, or parent can hold us to them.

    Evidence, never accusations

    We will never reduce a student to a probability or hand a school a verdict it cannot see or explain. Cognition surfaces understanding, not guilt.

    The teacher always decides

    Our AI informs a teacher’s professional judgement; it never replaces it. No consequential decision about a student is ever automated.

    Built for minors first

    Most of the people on the other side of a conversation are children. Privacy and safety are defaults we design around, not settings we bolt on.

    Student data is not our business model

    We do not sell personal information, we do not run ads, and we never use student work to train AI models.

    Fair to every student

    A conversation meets students in their own words, so we do not penalise non-native speakers or particular writing styles the way detection tools do.

    Honest about our limits

    We say plainly what AI can and cannot do. When a feature cannot meet our standards for fairness, safety, or transparency, we do not ship it.
